How To Clean Dehumidifier

When your dehumidifier starts making a wheezy noise, develops a faint musty smell, or simply isn’t filling the tank as quickly as usual, a thorough cleaning is normally the fix. Dust and mineral scale build up over time and make the appliance work harder, which is why knowing how to clean a dehumidifier is so useful. The hands-on routine takes about 20 minutes, and you probably already have the supplies at home.

What you’ll need

  • White vinegar
  • Dish soap and warm water
  • Microfiber cloths
  • Soft brush or old toothbrush
  • Vacuum with brush attachment
  • Cotton swabs

Step-by-step guide

  1. Unplug the unit and empty the tank. Never clean a plugged-in appliance. Remove the bucket and pour the collected water down a sink or drain.
  2. Wipe the outside surfaces. Dampen a microfiber cloth with warm, soapy water and clean the top, sides, and air vents. Avoid harsh sprays or abrasive scrubbers, which can dull the plastic.
  3. Take out the filter. Most dehumidifiers have a washable mesh filter on the back or side. Rinse it under lukewarm tap water, gently dusting away lint with a soft brush if needed. Set it aside to dry completely while you clean the rest of the unit.
  4. Wash the bucket. Use a drop of dish soap and warm water to remove the slippery film that can form along the sides and bottom. Swish it around, rinse thoroughly, and set the tank aside to dry.
  5. Vacuum the coils. With the filter out, look for the metal coils at the back. Gently vacuum across them with the brush attachment to pull away dust, lint, and pet hair, taking care not to bend the fragile fins.
  6. Clean the humidity sensor. A small slotted sensor sits near the coils and measures moisture levels. A layer of dust here can confuse the machine, so wipe it gently with a dry cotton swab and keep moisture out of the sensor housing.
  7. Reassemble and run a test cycle. Make sure the filter and bucket are completely dry, then slide them back into place. Plug the unit in and let it run for about an hour to confirm the fan sounds quiet and the air moving through feels fresh.

🧽 Note: Skip the bleach on the tank and filter; mild dish soap is all you need. If mineral film has already built up inside the bucket, fill it with a cup of white vinegar and warm water, let it sit for 15 minutes, then rinse well.

Once a month during humid seasons is plenty for most homes. If your dehumidifier runs every day, shorten that to every two weeks and check the filter more often. Building this into your routine keeps the appliance running smoothly, prevents damp odors, and helps you avoid a bigger cleaning job later.
